A look at Texas Tech in 1955

Added to the University Archives is a colored campus map showing the structures on the campus in 1956. The legend below lists when the structures were built, as well as the date of a major addition, and, in a few cases, the date of when the structure was demolished. It's quite amazing just how many of the original structures still exist.

Football video available

On September 20, 1958, the Red Raiders of Texas Tech University played the Aggies of Texas A&M in an away game in Dallas, Texas. Though Tech still played in the Border conference it was already on its way into the Southwest Conference and had played A&M numerous times. Though Tech trailed 14-0 at the half the Red Raiders fought their way back to a 15-14 lead. Tech's All-American linebacker, E. J. Holub, blocked an Aggie field goal with two minutes to go to guarantee the Tech victory.

A short video clip has been made of this game, courtesy of the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, and is available for online viewing here.

Landmark Case

A unique collection in the University Archives has now been digitized. "The Catalyst" was a controversial, underground student newspaper at Texas Tech University during a time of political, social and academic upheaval from 1969-1971. The attempts to censor and/or cease publication of the newspaper lead to a court battle that has become one the most notable court cases in the area of freedom of the press for school newspapers. It is often cited in cases of censorship of student presses. The collection is available for viewing here http://collections.swco.ttu.edu/handle/10605/121
